Corridors of Life
“I began to reflect on Nature's eagerness to sow life everywhere, to fill the planet with it, to crowd with it the earth, the air, and the seas. Into every corner, into all forgotten things and nooks, Nature struggles to pour life, pouring life into the dead, life into life itself. That immense, overwhelming, relentless, burning ardency of Nature for the stir of life! And all these her creatures, even as these thwarted lives, what travail, what hunger and cold, what bruising and slow-killing struggle will they not endure to accomplish earth's purpose? and what conscious resolution of men can equal their impersonal, their congregate will to yield self life to the will of life universal?” - Henry Beston
Connecting islands of our planet & peoples.
If sustainability forms the corners of the ecological puzzle, then our Corridors of Life (COL) Project is the framework — the straight-edged pieces that give shape and structure. While distinct from community-led or “Friends of” groups, COL plays a supportive role, creating continuity and ensuring the longevity of work and gains achieved by community groups.
Green corridors bridge the gaps between fragmented habitats, enabling ancient and instinctual wildlife movements across disrupted urban landscapes. These pathways reduce mortality and the need for human intervention, providing refuge for the scattered, surviving organs of entire ecosystems. As humans, we’ve forgotten that we are part of this system - not above it. When ecosystems collapse, we collapse with them. We are not greater than nature. Imagine, one day, having to migrate just to find a place where we can survive. Let's not let it come to that - not for ourselves, and not for the wild beings still holding the line. The Corridors of Life Project is foundational to our work because it's far simpler to protect what was already part of the plan than to try and retrofit entire cities back into conservancies. If only more people understood: when wildlife wins, we do too — in the ways that matter most.
